IO-Link is a brand name for a communication system for connecting intelligent sensors and actuators to an automation system according to IEC 61131-9.
This standardization includes the electrical connection data and a digital communication protocol via which the sensors and actuators enter into data exchange with the automation system.

IO-Link does not have a bus topology, but it is a powerful point-to-point communication, where the device can be parametrized, and the measured values transferred. The integration to the master is easy by using the IODD-file.
Due to the IO-Link interface, the devices are interesting for all users in plant and machine engineering, to exchange process data, diagnostic reports and status messages with a superordinate control level, as standard. In addition, further information can be retrieved that allow conclusions to the application process.
